In the traditional Bulgarian medicine the rosehip fruit is used as a source of vitamins, to strengthen the defending forces of organism, especially in fall, winter and early spring.
It has been established scientifically that the healing properties of the rosehip are due to its rich vitamin C content, carotene (pro-vitamin A), licopene, pectin, vitamins B1 and B2, as well as vitamins PP and K. It has a high content of mineral salts – mainly potassium, calcium, phosphoric, magnesium and others, flavonoids (кempferol, quercetin, rutin).
Scientists explain the healing properties of the rosehip with the high content of vitamin C – it is 50 times higher than the one in the lemons. This combined with the other ingredients of the fruit stimulates the red blood cells formation, strengthens the capability to work and the defending forces of the organism.. That is why it is recommended in conditions of anemia, mental and physical fatigue, colds and avitaminosis.
Besides its high content of vitamin C the rosehip is richer in minerals and elements like potassium, magnesium, sodium, and phosphorus than other fruits and vegetables.
The combination of vitamin C and rutin (vitamin P) is beneficial to edema and vein conditions. For its content of pectin and tannins the traditional medicine uses the rosehip in gastric and bronchial conditions too. There is one interesting clinical trial carried out in Denmark with 94 patients with osteoarthritis which comes to the conclusion that the pain fades after three month’s administration of rosehip extract in comparison with the placebo group.
